2022 Horse Judging Contest Results
|
|
|
|
Champion Senior Team- Chatham County

The 2022 NC State 4-H and FFA Horse Judging Contests were held on April 9 at Martin Community College. One-hundred and thirty-one 4-H’ers competed in the Senior, Senior Rookie, Junior, Junior
Rookie, and Cloverbud divisions. Contestants placed four halter, and nine performance classes. Special thanks to the staff and students of Martin Community College for hosting the event and allowing us to use their excellent facilities.
Mary Dickerson and Ruth Vorder Bruegge coached the Chatham senior team to champion honors. Team members were Kyra Worth, Sara Richardson, Hannah Williams, and Samantha Durham. Hannah Williams, representing
Chatham county, was the high overall senior individual.
The Currituck county junior team, coached by Tom Harrell, captured the champion team prize. Team members were Carsyn Sawyer, Emerson Page, Poppy Wright, and Leah Suthers. Carsyn Sawyer captured the high individual in oral reasons and the overall high-scoring junior title.
Harnett county 4-H’ers Mei-Yao MacKinnon and Koltlyn Cotten took home the high individual Junior Rookie and Senior Rookie titles, respectively. Both young ladies are coached by Karen Jones.

2022 Artistic Expression & Creative Writing Contest
|
|
|
The online registration forms for all Artistic Expression and Creative Writing contests are now open! The forms must be completed by June 1 and the deadline for entry fees to be received by NCSU Extension Equine Husbandry is June 15.

2022 State Horse Show | July 6th - 10th

|
The NC 4-H State Horse Show will be held July 6-10, 2022, at the James B. Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh.
NEW for 2022 is an exhibitor sponsorship incentive! 4-H’ers that submit completed and paid sponsorships with their State Show Entry form will receive 20% of the sponsorship fees collected off of their total show bill.
Youth that attend qualifying shows, please be sure to pay close attention to the due dates for your entries to be
submitted.

Nominate a deserving youth and/or adult volunteer for the 2022 Candace Norman Service Award! Applications
are due June 8. Winners will be announced during the Friday night Opening Ceremonies at the State 4-H Horse Show.

Southern Regionals 2022 | August 3rd - 7th
|
|
|
In accordance with 4-H Horse Program rules, the top seventy horses and exhibitors will be eligible to compete at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships in Perry, Georgia on August 3-7, 2022.
2022 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Show entries will close PROMPTLY AT 12:00 Noon at the State 4-H Horse Show Office on Sunday July 10, 2022.
One qualifying position is
reserved for a 4-H member exhibiting in Roping classes and one position is reserved for the highest Dressage Division ride score from either the Training or First-Level Dressage classes at the State Show. The State 4-H Horse Advisory Committee executive committee shall select a 4-H member based upon participation in 4-H Horse Program activities and performance in roping events. Exhibitors wishing to be considered as a Roping representative must submit a letter requesting consideration to the state Extension horse specialist’s office before the State 4-H Horse Show.

2022 Horsemanship Camp | June 12-17 @ Millstone
|
|
|
Bring
your equine partner to camp! A signature Millstone camp for over 45 years, Horsemanship Camp will improve your horsemanship skills while having fun with other campers.
All breeds and disciplines welcome! Classes are divided by skill level and riding style. For campers aged 8 - 18. Campers will have the opportunity to:
- Have
riding lessons on their own horse twice daily, taught by qualified staff
- Participate in and watch
training demonstrations from professionals
- Play games on horseback
- Learn new and better horsemanship skills and techniques
- Participate in trail rides
- Practice new skills, such as horse judging, equine first aid, and much more!
Campers
must supply own feed, tack, horse, etc. Register today, there is only a few spots remaining.

Intro To Western Dressage | May 22nd

Have you been hearing about Western Dressage? Wondering what all the excitement is all about?
Join us for a day of Western Dressage to learn the basics you need to know to help get you started in the arena! All breeds and styles of riding are welcome!
We will start by developing an understanding the goals and biomechanics of Western Dressage. Review of showing procedures, gaits, tack and attire, basic rules, and strategies for learning a test. You will learn about the different organizations and many ways to show. Then we will move to working in the saddle by practicing some of the gaits, transitions and elements needed to ride a Western Dressage test well. We will top off our day by having each person practice riding a current test. (WDDA 2022 - Introductory Test 2)
9:30 AM start time—introductory section on foot. 11:00 AM – Begin riding some exercises Lunch (please bring your own)
Shannon St. Clair Hoffman has over 20 years, experience Judging Open Shows in several states. She is certified in all four categories for the NCSU Open Horse Shows Judges' Certification Clinic list. She regularly judges Hunter and Open Shows, including Ranch and Gaited classes in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In the past she has successfully competed at the AQHA Congress, Dressage at Devon and the Western Dressage World Show, along with multiple Trail and Ranch events.
Her mule, Queen of the
Savanna was Open Western Dressage Introductory Division NCDCTA Horse of the Year Reserve Champion in 2020 and NCDCTA Horse of the Year Champion in 2021. Shannon taught at the Millstone 4-H Horsemanship Camp for several years and owns, St. Clair Equine, a business that offers training and lessons to kids and adults at all stages of working with their horses, mules, and donkeys. Shannon is available for private lessons at your farm.

West District 3-Day Horsemanship Camp
|

Date: June 20 - June 22, 2022
This horsemanship clinic is designed for youth to increase their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. Each child brings his/her horse and throughout the three-day clinic, participants will receive instruction in riding classes by selected disciplines. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rider, this clinic has something to offer you!
